Berlitz Hints - Present Perfect

We use the Present Perfect Tense to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. You CAN'T use the Present Perfect with time expressions such as yesterday, one year ago, last week, at that moment, for example. We CAN use the Present Perfect with expressions like ever, never, many times, several times and yet.

  • EXAMPLES: "I have seen that movie four times" or "I think she has met Jane once before".

How do you actually use the Present Perfect?

  • You can use the Present Perfect to describe your experience - I've been to Italy.
  • You can use it to talk about a change that has happened over a period of time - My English has improved since I started studying at Berlitz.
  • We often use the Present Perfect to list the accomplishments of individuals - My cousin has learned how to drive.
  • Use the Present Perfect to say that an action which we expected has not happened - John has not finished his work yet.

We hope you enjoy. Feel free to ask questions or post comments.
